Buying your first mechanical keyboard? It sounds fun until you fall into the keyboard jungle. Suddenly there are a thousand layouts, materials, and switches - and everything looks amazing but confusing.
The truth is, it's super easy to mess up your first keyboard purchase.
Today I am going to talk about something every keyboard beginner needs to hear: Tips you need to know before buying your first mechanical keyboard.
Choosing the layout
Not all compact keyboards are created equal. Some cut too many keys, others just shuffle them around like a confused puzzle. Before buying anything, ask yourself: Do I use arrow keys a lot? Function row? A numpad for work? Choosing the wrong layout is like buying pants without checking the size - you will regret it the first time you wear it.
Obsessing over materials
Yes, aluminum sounds fancy, But plastic isn't bad - especially for your first board. Plastic keyboard is light, budget, and sounds surprisingly nice. You don't really need to pay the "Aluminum Tax" right away.
Spending too much on your first board
Your first custom keyboard is not your soulmate - it's just your first date.
Start with something simple, cheaper. Trust me, it works and it helps you learn what you actually like. Once you know your taste, you can explore the cool stuff like more premium keyboards with fancy features, design and - fancy price tags.
Getting distracted by specs
Hot-swap, south-facing RGB, gasket mounts - sounds awesome right?
But just because it's on the spec sheet doesn't mean it feels good to type on. Focus on how it sounds, how it feels, and how it fits into your workflow. Sometimes a keyboard with basic features feels better than a spec monster. Don't get catfished by features.
So - whether you are just getting started or already have a few boards at home, I hope this helps you skip some classic mistakes. so which layout do you like best?
