Design Notes and Inspiration

Hi everyone, This is the latest project: NV70 by GDK Lab.

CASE DESIGN

The NV-70 draws its inspiration from Hyundai’s 2022 concept car - the N Vision 74.

A masterpiece that perfectly blends retro charm with futuristic innovation. With its timeless silhouette and aerodynamic lines, the N Vision 74 redefined the direction of modern automotive design. Guided by the same design spirit, the NV-70 was born.

As part of our new-generation design language, we aimed to infuse more distinctive and expressive elements into the NV-70’s sharp and dynamic form - an evolution from our earlier K Series and D Series design.

Fusion Beyond Boundaries

During the creative process, we knew that simply transplanting automotive elements into a keyboard would never work. After all, cars and keyboards differ vastly in both function and form - each serving entirely different purposes and experiences.

To make the two worlds blend seamlessly, the key lies in extracting the most iconic, soulful elements of automotive design and reimagining them through the lens of a keyboard. By integrating these details with the product’s core functionality, we allow the keyboard to retain its true essence while gaining a distinctive personality that sets it apart.

Design:

On the front layout, we reimagined the traditional 70% configuration by raising the numpad section and introducing a divider between the main area and the numpad. This adjustment creates a more balanced and visually harmonious front.

We also modified the nav cluster to allow for a swappable, customizable numpad zone - adding a new layer of creativity and playability to the overall design. You can use it as a FRL TKL or transform the right side into a numpad or other macro / function keys.

We also drew inspiration from the bold, futuristic aesthetic of Tesla’s cybertruck to design the TKL addon, incorporating automotive grille motifs and creating a mechanical, forward-looking design.

In both the front and rear design, we echoed the air intake grilles of automobiles. To ensure visual harmony, these elements were simplified and refined, allowing the overall aesthetic to blend seamlessly with the keyboard’s form and character.

From the side profile, we simplified and refined the signature lines of the N Vision 74, preserving its distinctive angled lower contour. The decorative components feature an inward recess, echoing the aerodynamic tunnel design often seen in race cars.

For the weight design, we utilized a solid stainless steel block, leaving generous areas of open space to highlight the craftsmanship. Extensive cuts and chamfers were applied along the sides and edges, echoing the front splitter design commonly found in performance cars.

On the back, the dual-weight system adopts an interlocking structure, creating a more compact and streamlined silhouette. The layered composition adds depth and visual tension, while the grille-inspired design on the central weight acts as a visual divider - giving the keyboard an elongated yet balanced proportion.

We incorporated a series of angled cuts and precise lines to refine the details and edges, preserving the mechanical strength and bold character of the grille motif. Every curve and transition on the back has been thoughtfully sculpted, showcasing a balance between engineering precision and artistic intent.

We applied different printing and finishing techniques to the bottom case and the weight, enriching the rear design with diverse textures and layers. These subtle decorative touches embody our design philosophy - bringing more depth and character to the NV-70’s overall aesthetic.

The NV-70 continues to utilize a dual-gasket mount system - with both plate and PCB gaskets available, providing a balanced typing feel. This time, we have redesigned the silicone gaskets, optimizing their size and placement to enhance both consistency and overall typing experience.

To support multiple layouts, the bottom case features a through horizontal slot that accommodates various switch positions, while the internal structure has been further compacted to achieve a lower front height for improved ergonomics and comfort.
